The projectAccepting the fact that the number of drug users will be significant in the closest or longer time horizon, we must search for possibilities how to positively interfere into risky activities of the steet scene. This project of streetworkers partly preventively regulates consequences of risky injection way of using drugs. Besides this basic aim, it pursues also making contacts with subjects who constantly reject contact with any social institution. We cannot expect that they will quickly enough i.e. safely throw off their „revolt“, but we must be able to offer them in their self-harming stage the services which they are willing to accept.
The project of harm reduction on whatever level of accessibility is not a service only for drug users, but in the second place it also significantly protects residents of the capital town Prague froms preading of infectious diseases. Tertiary it can be supposed that consumer who positively experiences contat with our streetworker, will be also more helpful to communicate another topics than sterile needle and syringe. This can also significantly influence his/her attitude to the institution managing the program or to lifestile that he/she has preferred.
The aim of the projectThe aim of the project to contact street syringe users of illegal drugs is a reduction of health risks, social a criminal consequences of drug using and not only for users but second-hand also for other residents of the capital town Prague.
Description of the current stage of problems, which the project is solvingHealth sideWith the growth of the number of illegal drugs consumers, there has grown a significant group of people in the drug subculture, who are not willing to make contacts with common drop in centres offering „HARM REDUCTION“program. According to specialists it is a group of about 50-70% of all drug users. According to data of the hygienic station 70% of drug users apply it intravenously.
The streetworkers program is specially aimed at this group of people who cannot be contacted through institutions. Today stage of growing risk of infectious diseases of intravenous drug users this „grey zone“ becomes dangerous factor for health of all citizens of the Czech Republic and specially to residens in major towns and in Prague, where the concentration of intravenous users is the highest. For these reasons the program to deal hygienic utensils is the asset to community as a whole.
Often cause of death of a drug user is breakdown of immune system. It is not caused only by using drugs, but specially by bad life style (littlesleep, lack of vitamins, lack of hygiene, overtaxing of organism). The streetwork program can solve this problem in concrete way: vitamins or counselling, offering place to wash, information about risks of using particular drug or drugs generally, offering treatment. In the case of life danger streetworkers can provide first aid.
Social sideDrug users are persons of all social classes. The streetwork program has the possibility to contact every drug user and moreover it has a possibility to search for users whose position in the society can be problematic, therefore its solving is more complicated. Delinquency preventionThe problem of delinquency in the field of using illegal narcotics and psychotropic drugs is generally very wide. The field of drug dealing is fully in the competency of the police. The streetwork program is aimed only at delinquency of users themselves:
The project of assistents for field contact with intravenal users of drugs has been practised in The Drop In Centre since November 1996. During the existence of this project it was achieved besides our workers contacting drug users to map dealing points in different parts of Prague. At the same time it has been managed to transfer contacts from streets to The Drop In centre, whis is an important step to possible relation not only on the base of harm reduction, but also the first possible contemplation about his/her life program. The project clearly managed to confirm its important position in the system of care about both drug users and institutions in the field of the cure of drug addictions.
The program of streetworkersWe monitor places in Prague centre and surrounding area, where illegal drugs are changed, sold or used. The streetwork program closely cooperates with the program Mobil Street and the Drop In centre.
There are three long-term workers in the Streetwork program each working part-time. They work every weekday 12:00-8:00 p.m. and during weekend 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Educational stays in the Streetwork programIf you are interested in educational stay in the Streetwork program, we recomend you to agree on the term few weeks in advance. We have opportunity for every applicant interested in similar type of work and for students of humanitarian schools. We offer familiarization with theoretical base of the work, explain basic principles of the work and finally you will be given opportunity to try streetwork itself. For your questions you will have our worker at disposal. Specialized library of ours will be also at your disposal and after agreement it is possible to consult founders of the foundation DROP IN, respectively the Cenre for prevention and cure of drug addictions – DROP IN o.p.s. PhDr Ivan Douda and MUDr. Jiří Presl. Basic term of an educational stay is one week, the stay costs 1000 CZK, for students 500CZK.
